Last year I took a trip to Mexico and I ate lentils for the first time in all of my thirty-two years, I loved them! When I came back home I began looking for recipes, I discovered that vegetarians utilize these tiny beans and that lentils are a good  addition to living a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle.

The latest issue of the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) has a very interesting study on the effect of increased vegetable and fruit consumption (High Fiber Diet) on breast cancer patients.

There has been significant evidence (in the scientific literature) that foods, and especially plant-derived foods (fruits and vegetables), contain cancer fighting compounds. A 1997 publication on Food and Cancer established that high vegetables /fruit diets probably decreases Breast Cancer and High Diet Fiber: Are More Fruits and Vegetables Helpful?Date: July 20, 2007breast cancer risk and, on the contrary, high total fat diets possibly increases cancer risk. The information on Breast cancer and the relationship with diet is somehow confusing and mixed on the positive effects of high fiber diets.

The study's (see reference bellow for original paper) purpose was to evaluate if an increase in the consumption of vegetables, fruits, and fiber, and a decrease in fat has an effect on the risk of recurrent and new breast cancer development. Also, it examined if such high-fiber/limited fat intake may have an effect on the all-cause mortality rate among women with previously treated early stage breast cancer.

People have to follow a high fiber diet for a number of reasons. For me, I've been seeing a gastroenterologist for several months to determine the root cause of my anemia. Along the way, I've had a number of invasive tests, but we still don't know why  I'm anemic. After my colonoscopy, though, the doctor did discover a tiny hyperplastic polyp and both internal and external hemorrhoids . His prescription: a high fiber diet.

The problem for me: I dislike most vegetables, which comprise most of the better sources of fiber.

According to my doctor, I should be consuming 30 grams of fiber each day, which was a bit more than the 20 grams I'd been trying to consume before I had him clarify the amount for me.

Organic Golden Flax High Fiber Cereal from Naturally Preferred

My Son Loved This Cereal and I Thought it was Good Too

Time and time again I seem to try out high fiber cereals. I think that a high fiber cereal comes with the territory of a healthy organic one. I really don't mind though, as long as the cereal is nutritious, made with good ingredients and taste good that it all that I am concerned about.  That is why when I was looking over some different cereals I was paying attention to the small lettering on the box that read "provides six vitamins." This sounded like a promising cereal to me, despite its title Organic Golden Flax High Fiber Cereal from Naturally Preferred.

This was the second cereal that I had got from the Naturally Preferred company and probably about the eleventh food item of theirs. Prior to this flax cereal I tried the Organic Honey Fiber Multigrain Cereal and before that I tried their Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce, Organic Blackberry Apple Sauce, Organic Roasted Garlic, Organic Italian Herb and Organic Tomato Basil pasta sauces, their Organic Semolina Spaghetti, Organic Whole Wheat Spaghetti, Organic Carrots and Organic Frozen Broccoli. They were known for inexpensive organic foods and time and time again they were very good organic foods so I saw no reason not to support them. I liked the taste of the last cereal and enjoyed this one's taste as well. Despite being a flax cereal it was very tasty. It was well sweetened so you couldn't taste the heartiness that comes with flax seeds but not so sweet that the cereal became more like candy. I would say it was a very nice balance. I checked the ingredients to see what sweeteners the cereals used and where they fell on the list.

High-Fiber Diet: How Food Fibers Aid the Digestive System

A high-fiber diet is increasingly popular as people have become more active in maintaining their health. It was once thought that food fibers have no food value as such. Today however, food fibers are considered valuable constituents in the diet. The most  commonly recognized benefit of a high-fiber diet is that it keeps one "regular"; that is, it helps prevent constipation.

Often also referred to as roughage, fiber is a nonnutritious material found in food which is not digested by the enzymes in the digestive tract. This indigestible material in food stimulates the intestine to peristalsis - the successive waves of involuntary contraction passing along the intestine's walls and forcing the contents onward. A high-fiber diet is also helpful in preventing diarrhea, hemorrhoids, diverticulitis (a painful inflammation of the diverticula - small pouches along the colon wall), and irritable bowel syndrome.

There are two kinds of food fiber: insoluble and soluble. Insoluble, or nonabsorbent, food fibers can be found in cereals, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and in many kinds of vegetables and fruits. These food fibers increase the bulk and liquid content of the feces, making them softer and thus easier to pass through the intestines. As the passage of feces is made easier, less strain is placed on the intestines, effectively decreasing the risk of developing hemorrhoids. Insoluble food fibers reduce the absorption of cancer-causing agents and lessen the amount of time these agents remain in the digestive system; hence, insoluble food fibers may likewise diminish the risk of colon cancer.

Ever since I hit the big 4-0, I feel like my life revolves around things that I don't even remember my grandmother ever having to worry about. For the life of me I cannot remember her ever asking, "How much soluble fiber does that have?" or "Is that whole grain?"

In the "olden days," when you ate something high in fiber, you KNEW it. In the "olden days," not only did your grandparents have to walk a mile to school uphill each way, but they had to do so while gnawing on tree bark for their daily supply of fiber. Not so anymore! Now granted, the  idea that something healthy can hide in our food without us having a clue it's there can be a bit scary to swallow. But technology and food-manufacturers have been kind to us, and we should be appreciative - and not take our easy-to-eat fiber for granted.

High Fiber Barley Helps in Diabetes Prevention

In the United States over 24 million Americans have Type 2 diabetes. One of the key ingredients in helping manage diabetes is eating a high fiber diet. Diabetes is one of the greatest growing risks to people today.

Clinical trials have shown that people who have eaten food containing barley had lower levels of glucose and better insulin response than those that ate similar products containing whole wheat or corn.
